May Team Email - May 14, 2014

Hello Everyone,

In the past couple of days we’ve actually seen a glimpse of spring.  Despite the rough weather we are making good progress towards this year’s event and we are currently over the $500k mark.  Although this is only half way to our goal, we still have almost 4 weeks until the day of the event. Don’t despair if we all pull together we can get there.  For those of you that have reached the minimum plateau, congratulations!  Now it’s time to raise your bar and push a little harder. For those who are just beginning their fundraising GET MOVING.   It’s now the perfect time to start motivating each other to get in gear as we all have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks.

If you know anyone who wants to ride, it’s not too late as we still have some extra spots reserved.  There are no excuses, and no quitters in this fight against cancer.   


Now that we are into May you should be riding outside 3 to 4 times a week in all types of weather. There is no way of knowing what the weather will be on June 7th & 8th, so we need to prepare for whatever conditions are thrown at us. The other important thing is “saddle time”, the more kms peddled, the less it’ll hurt on the RTCC.  

Our Toronto Team Training Ride will be held on Saturday, May 25th at 8:30am leaving from the Starbucks located at 8010 Bathurst Street, Thornhill. These rides are weather permitting.  Please email me at if you are interested and we’ll keep you posted by Saturday night (May 24th) if there will be any change. We intend to have 2 groups riding approximately 40km to 60km and perhaps enjoy a coffee at the end.

For anyone in the Hamilton/Niagara/Burlington/Oakville area there is a nice charity ride on Sunday, May 25th with varying distances and a minimal donation required ($55.00).  This could be a perfect tune up and it is a great ride with 3 distances to choose from. See the link for details:

The Hincapie Shipment should arrive next week and we are hoping to start shipping these starting on Tuesday, May 20th.  We may have a few extras so if you haven’t ordered one or joined the team late, please contact Dave Winckler at


We are in BIG need of many volunteers this year to help execute this 3 daylong event.  If you have a whole day or if you have a few hours, please email Jacqueline at this link  Weekend Volunteer and let her know what time slots you have available and if you have a vehicle.   If you have high school students in the home that need some community service hours, this would definitely apply but you need to volunteer with them.

Like previous years we will be providing transportation for you on Friday from Salit Steel (Niagara Falls) to Toronto, along with your bike.  Details are to follow when we get closer to the ride.  During Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning we will be providing a shuttle bus to and from Mohawk College, the hotel. After you arrive in Niagara Falls on Sunday, we will be providing a shuttle service from the finish line back to Salit Steel for you, your bike and family.

We have made arrangements to shuttle riders and their bikes from NF to Toronto on Friday, June 6thThe bus will leave Salit Steel @ 2:00pm “SHARP” and the cost will be $20.00 PP. Toronto Start

In previous years the congestion of vehicles trying to get to the start line has been grid lock and a nightmare.  Last year we had the bikes delivered to the Novotel at 45 The Esplanade and many of our Toronto riders meet us there, put their luggage on the trucks and rode with us from there to Ontario Place.  This worked out extremely well and we strongly encourage people to meet us at the hotel from 7 - 7:30 a.m. it will be much more efficient.

Final thoughts

In closing although June 7th may seem a long way away, it will be here before you realize. The time is now to get excited and start training, fund raising and get your families and friends involved in all of your efforts.
